Oil is used in transformers primarily to provide electrical insulation and effective cooling, both of which are essential for safe and reliable operation. A transformer generates heat during normal operation due to copper losses in the windings and iron losses in the core. If this heat is not properly dissipated, it can damage insulation materials and significantly reduce the transformer’s service life. Transformer oil plays a vital role in managing these challenges.


One of the main functions of transformer oil is insulation. The oil has high dielectric strength, which allows it to withstand high electrical stress without breaking down. It fills the spaces between live parts inside the transformer, preventing electrical discharges, short circuits, and flashovers. By acting as a barrier between conductors and grounded components, the oil enhances the overall insulation system of the transformer.


Another critical function of transformer oil is cooling. As the transformer operates, heat produced in the windings and core is absorbed by the oil. The heated oil rises and circulates naturally or through forced cooling systems toward radiators or cooling fins, where the heat is dissipated into the surrounding air. The cooled oil then flows back into the transformer tank, maintaining a stable operating temperature and preventing overheating.

Transformer oil also serves a protective function. It helps protect solid insulation materials, such as paper and pressboard, from direct contact with oxygen and moisture, both of which accelerate aging. By limiting oxidation and reducing moisture content, the oil extends the life of internal insulation and improves long-term reliability.

In addition, transformer oil aids in fault detection. During abnormal electrical or thermal conditions, the oil decomposes and produces gases that dissolve in the oil. Analysis of these gases can help identify internal faults at an early stage.

In summary, transformer oil is essential because it provides insulation, cooling, protection, and diagnostic support, ensuring efficient performance, safety, and long service life of transformers.
